How Many Rounds Are in the MLB Draft in 2025?
Just like in 2024, this year’s MLB Draft will consist of 20 rounds. That’s 614 picks in total, giving hundreds of players a chance to begin their professional baseball journey.
The condensed format (down from 40 rounds in the past) puts even more pressure on front offices to make their selections count. And for viewers at home, it makes the first few days of the Draft more impactful and fast-paced than ever.
Who’s Eligible for the 2025 Draft?
Eligibility rules for the MLB Draft can be a bit complex, but here’s the breakdown for 2025:
- Players at four-year colleges become eligible once they’ve completed their junior year or turned 21 years old.
- High school graduates who have not yet attended college are eligible.
- Players who have completed at least one year of junior college also qualify.
- Draft-eligible players must be residents of the United States, its territories (such as Puerto Rico), or Canada.
That means we’ll be seeing a mix of high school stars, polished college hitters, and breakout JUCO talents entering the draft pool
Can Teams Trade MLB Draft Picks?
In contrast to other professional sports like the NFL or NBA, most MLB Draft picks cannot be traded. However, there’s one exception: Competitive Balance Draft picks. These special picks can be traded, but with limitations.
They can’t be traded for cash alone and can only be traded by the club to which they were awarded. These restrictions ensure the integrity of the draft while still allowing some strategic flexibility for smaller-market teams to make moves.
